These backs are made around a 1 mm post opening, which is the size used on the great majority of stud, drop and hoop earrings. The same opening takes both kinds of post:
- Push back posts — the plain smooth post on most earrings. The clutch slides on and clicks into its locked position.
- Screw back posts — the threaded post on finer pieces. The clutch seats over the thread and locks, so you are not dependent on finding the original matching back.
How the lock works. A bullet clutch has a small sprung sleeve inside. Press it, slide the back onto the post, release, and it grips. To take it off, press the sleeve again and it lets go. No tools, and nothing to wear out the way a soft butterfly back does.
How to check your own pair. Look at the post end-on. A standard earring post is roughly as thick as a strand of uncooked spaghetti and will fit. A visibly heavier post — some antique, industrial and body-jewelry posts run thicker than 1 mm — will not go on.

Both sizes use the same 1 mm post opening and the same 3 mm cylinder. What changes is the pad — the flat disc that rests against the back of the lobe.
6 mm pad (5.6 mm tall) — the wider of the two. That extra surface spreads the weight of the earring across more of the lobe, which is what keeps a heavier stud, a drop or a small hoop from tipping forward through the day. Choose this one if your earrings droop, or if the piercing has softened a little over the years.
4.36 mm pad (5.3 mm tall) — the discreet one. It holds just as securely but sits closer behind the ear, so it stays out of sight and does not catch on a collar or a pillow. Choose this for lighter everyday studs.
If you are buying for a mixed jewelry box, the 6 mm is the safer single choice — it will hold a light earring perfectly well, while the smaller pad cannot do much for a heavy one.
The body of each back is 925 sterling silver, the same metal we use throughout our silver collections. Sterling is alloyed with copper rather than nickel, which is why it sits comfortably against most sensitive ears. Over that base goes the finish you choose here: 18K yellow gold plating for a warm tone, or rhodium plating for a bright white finish that also slows tarnishing.
About tarnish. Silver darkens over time when it meets air, skin oils and moisture. That is ordinary and reversible, not a fault. The plating holds it off for a long while, and a wipe with a soft cloth brings the shine back.
Care. Wipe the backs with a soft dry cloth after wearing, which is the single thing that keeps them bright. When they need more, use warm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse, and dry completely before storing. Skip ultrasonic cleaners, silver dips and polishing compounds — those strip plating rather than clean it. Our polishing cloths are safe to use on these.
Put your earrings on after lotion, perfume and hairspray have dried, and take them off before swimming or sitting in a hot tub. Store them dry, in a pouch or a lined box.
